Peter Loves Jane_woodland wedding inspiration board

Hello there! I’m Nikkol, from Peter Loves Jane, and couldn’t be happier to be guest posting on Coco/Mingo today! Like all of you, I am so inspired by Jessica’s curations. Her eye for the details of design is impeccable, and I adore the shops that she introduces. As a graphic designer by nature (and trade) I find myself being inspired by the everyday, ordinary parts of life. (Though, I find the city in all its forms to be one of the most inspiring places.) Somehow, I carved out a spot for myself in the wedding world. I blog about people, love and good design.

Wedding inspiration boards are always happening over on my blog, so I thought I’d continue in Jessica’s tradition of inspiration boards and add a wedding twist. My style tends to be a little darker and moody – think Pacific Northwest. Rainy days are my favorite. I feel so inspired and motivated on those dreary grey days. Since Jessica inspires me with her light filled imagery, I wanted to branch out with today’s wedding inspiration board.

A number of my current clients are really into the Indie arrows and tribal patterns, so when I came across this dress on Jessica’s Pinterest board, I knew I wanted to build a board around it. To me, it resembles a feather, without really being tribal at all. It’s quite a stylishly understated dress that would be perfect for a slightly non-traditional bride. Of course, in a tribal inspired board, there must be hints of nature. The moose antler is one of my favorites. Something like this could easily be mixed in with soft white florals, herbs and greenery for a stunning and unexpected centerpiece. In choosing a venue, I would definitely find one that has large windows with a backdrop of woodlands. An eco-friendly invitation screen-printed on a washed cotton towel is the perfect introduction to guests of what lies in store. Simplicity and a clean background would be key in this celebration.

I will let you in on a secret. My design process when working on boards, is to gather and arrange the images first, and then pull a color palette from them. Occasionally, I will start with a color palette and then find images that work with it, but I find that the images speak to me much louder than a specific color. When I pulled the colors from this board, and ended up with evergreen, navy and plum, I had to stop and wonder had just happened. Together, those colors are one of my least favorite combinations; reminding me of the horridly popular 1980 home décor trend. However, I love the board. I love the comfortable, yet stylish vibe. I was very surprised to find that a color palette, that I very nearly despise, when used together in small doses is actually quite beautiful.

So, again, with this wedding board, simplicity and a clean (white) background are essential. Adding statement pieces, such as the dress, and antler, go a long way, and should be the focal points. No need to clutter it up with the unnecessary.

Thank you, Jessica, for this lovely opportunity and for the chance to test my boundaries and explore color a bit more.

Parisian party_coco and mingo

Paris, France has always been on my list of dream travels, and I have no doubt that one day it’ll happen!  And if by chance, you ever happen to be throwing a party in Paris or would like to mimic a Parisian theme, then something sweet and romantic (yet fun) would be perfect (think macarons, vintage silverware, rooftops, and vespas)!  I love the idea of using a sophisticated color palette of black, champagne, and taupe and then livening things up with pops of fuschia or magenta color (like the flower bouquet below).

Party planning: Sweet treats #summer #inspiration

Oh, I feel like summer’s time is running out! So while we’ve still got it barely in our grasps, it’s time to plan a perfect “while-it’s-still-summer” party! Today’s Party Planning is inspired by my love for sweets, of course! And what makes a party better than a fabulous array of treats? This is a super relaxing get-together, next to a pool, with chilled homemade limoncello (and lemonade for the kiddos), every type of ice cream you can imagine, fun colors, and wild flowers – all mixed up to guarantee to be a great day! My gosh, I have really gotta get a grip on my crazy sweet tooth attacks…speaking of which, check out Once Wed for the recipe and how-to on making those delicious Floral Meringue Sandwiches with Lemon Curd Filling at the top right photo…yum!

Party planning: Inspiration board for couple’s retreat

Inspiration board: Party planner for couples retreat_coco and mingo

So I’ve been thinking about putting together an on-going series of inspiration boards specifically for party planning. I interned awhile back with a boutique wedding planning/design company here in New York, and apart from helping them put together photo shoots and wedding decor, I created some of their inspiration boards. I went into the internship really thinking that wedding planning/design was something that I wanted to learn more about and possibly delve deeper into – but truthfully, it’s a crazy business! It’s a lot of hard work, dedication, and passion, and I give all wedding planners/designers high credit! Unfortunately, I guess I just wasn’t as passionate about weddings as I was about life, so that kind of said something about my future as a wedding planner, right? However, I did learn that the thing that I loved most about the work was creating their inspiration boards. I’m excited to put together some great ideas for you, and no, not just weddings – so stay tuned for future Party Planning!

I thought today’s inspiration board would be perfect for a quaint, intimate couple’s retreat. These muted neutral colors bring a sense of nostalgia, sweetness, and romance to an outdoor getaway. Check out Reclaiming Provincial for the recipe to that beautiful looking Smoky Cardamom-Coconut Cuba Libre drink on the left! The syrup mixer contains cardamom, coconut sugar, and cinnamon – I can just imagine how delicious that is!
