DIY Holiday place cards // Rosemary mini wreaths

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Rosemary mini wreaths_holiday place cards

My dad and brother have been growing their green thumbs with a family garden where we have a ton of vegetables – eggplants, bell peppers, peas, lettuce, chili peppers, 2 types of tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, green onions, rosemary, and more that is yet to bud. I guess that’s the good thing about Hawaii – you can pretty much grow these veggies year ’round!

Now, let me tell you about our rosemary. It is huge. I mean, huge. That thing grows out of control. Well, my mom heard that rosemary gets rid of bugs + insects like cockroaches, so she literally has sachets and cups of rosemary around the entire house (and I think it works!). I mean, why not make use of the thing? It smells amazing! Open up any drawer or cabinet and you’ll find sprigs of rosemary there. Plus, she makes it into mini bouquets that smell divine. Anyway, how could I not be inspired by this herb when I was literally surrounded by it? It’s the holiday season and of course, we all love fir trees and wreaths! But I thought that rosemary would make for a great wreath place card idea! A perfect smell to accompany your meal. And when you’re done with it, it makes a great decoration piece to put on your fridge (it dries wonderfully!)

Supplies

// Pen + ink (I used calligraphy, but you don’t have to)
// Black card stock (or color of your choice) and translucent visual bond paper
// Raffia (or twine)
// Rosemary branches (or sub fir branches from your Christmas tree)
// Scissors
// Nylon thread
// Gold wrapped wire braid (or any sort of wire)
// Mini hole puncher

Create the mini wreath circle base with the gold wrapped wire. Using the nylon thread, attach the rosemary branches to the gold wrapped wire, overlapping where necessary. Have fun with it and be creative – I created full wreaths and half wreaths!

The Littlest Things_guest post_thankful list

Hi fellow COCO/MINGO readers! I am so excited to be guest posting today for the lovely Jess while she is away in Hawaii (so jealous!). I’m Sophie from The Littlest Things. I live in Sydney and down here instead of snuggling up in front of the fire in cozy winter clothes, we are enjoying the carefree fun of summertime. Real summer hasn’t even started yet but it’s already been sensational. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in stall (after a little winter trip to Canada)…if it involves more of the above and below then I will be ecstatic.

The Littlest Things about the summertime that make me so happy:

// the beachhhhhh (!!!)
// fresh fruit – particularly peaches, mangoes and strawberries
// palm trees and blue skies
// the road being too hot to walk on in bare feet
// jumping into the ocean
// afternoons by the pool
// getting outside
// spending days on the water
// falling asleep in the hammock
// coast side road trips
// bonfires
// endless games of backyard cricket
// waking up with the sun streaming through the curtains
// surfing
// days on the boat
// late afternoon thunderstorms

And sooooo much more. The list is never ending and that’s what makes me love summer so much. If you’re currently heading into winter then I hope this has brightened up your day ๐Ÿ™‚

Jane_Always with Yoo_guest post_coco and mingo

Hello Coco/Mingo readers! I’m Jane and I blog over at Always With Yoo where I share musings, love and laughter from the perspective of our little family while setting roots in the DC metropolitan area. I was delighted when Jessica asked if I would like to write a guest post and jumped at this wonderful opportunity to share a special holiday list.

When the leaves change color and the happiest time of the year is just around the corner, we pause for a moment to reflect on the year – the moments that made us happy, sad, triumphant and silly – and we give our heartfelt thanks. I always liked this time of year for this. I have fond memories of sitting in elementary school making paper craft turkeys and sharing my appreciation list, which then consisted of my family, friends, gymnastics, candy, the Carebears and Fraggle Rock with my classmates. This ole list of mine has, let’s say, “developed” over the years, but there are some things I am still thankful for now as I did back when I was seven:

1 // Family, friends and the endless ways we can now communicate
2 // Kind strangers and their beautiful gestures
3 // Gentle walks under the golden sunset
4 // Slow weekends with public radio shows and banana nut muffins
5 // Cocker spaniel whiskers and the way it tickles my hand
6 // Old pictures and their stories
7 // Feeling of turning the pages of a book
8 // Passing down family folklore and creating new traditions
9 // Space heaters and warm socks
10 // DC Donuts at Eastern Market and powder mustaches

This season brings wonderful reminders to reflect on what makes us whole and happy — it includes the little things that sometimes go overlooked in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

If you could take a moment now, what are some things you are thankful for?

GP04: Give Thanks // Alecia from Likes of Us

Give Thanks_Likes of Us_cocoandmingo

Hello Coco/Mingo readers – so nice to meet you! I am Alecia over atย Likes of Us, and I was so honored when Jessica asked me to guest blog for her while she is away. Since the holidays are here, I have started a list of things I am thankful for and thought it would be cool for us all to share in giving thanks. Of course, my list isn’t sporting the usual suspects of being thankful (i.e. friends, family, my home, etc.).ย I wanted to take the opportunity to be thankful for some small unassuming things like my comfy socks, my favorite color metallic gold along with my favorite pattern (stripes). When it comes down to it, it’s the small things in life that make us happy.

So cheers to being thankful for all things big or small!
