GP12: Woodland Wedding Inspiration board // Nikkol of Peter Loves Jane
Friday, December 6, 2013
Hello there! I’m Nikkol, from Peter Loves Jane, and couldn’t be happier to be guest posting on Coco/Mingo today! Like all of you, I am so inspired by Jessica’s curations. Her eye for the details of design is impeccable, and I adore the shops that she introduces. As a graphic designer by nature (and trade) I find myself being inspired by the everyday, ordinary parts of life. (Though, I find the city in all its forms to be one of the most inspiring places.) Somehow, I carved out a spot for myself in the wedding world. I blog about people, love and good design.
Wedding inspiration boards are always happening over on my blog, so I thought I’d continue in Jessica’s tradition of inspiration boards and add a wedding twist. My style tends to be a little darker and moody β think Pacific Northwest. Rainy days are my favorite. I feel so inspired and motivated on those dreary grey days. Since Jessica inspires me with her light filled imagery, I wanted to branch out with today’s wedding inspiration board.
A number of my current clients are really into the Indie arrows and tribal patterns, so when I came across this dress on Jessica’s Pinterest board, I knew I wanted to build a board around it. To me, it resembles a feather, without really being tribal at all. It’s quite a stylishly understated dress that would be perfect for a slightly non-traditional bride. Of course, in a tribal inspired board, there must be hints of nature. The moose antler is one of my favorites. Something like this could easily be mixed in with soft white florals, herbs and greenery for a stunning and unexpected centerpiece. In choosing a venue, I would definitely find one that has large windows with a backdrop of woodlands. An eco-friendly invitation screen-printed on a washed cotton towel is the perfect introduction to guests of what lies in store. Simplicity and a clean background would be key in this celebration.
I will let you in on a secret. My design process when working on boards, is to gather and arrange the images first, and then pull a color palette from them. Occasionally, I will start with a color palette and then find images that work with it, but I find that the images speak to me much louder than a specific color. When I pulled the colors from this board, and ended up with evergreen, navy and plum, I had to stop and wonder had just happened. Together, those colors are one of my least favorite combinations; reminding me of the horridly popular 1980 home dΓ©cor trend. However, I love the board. I love the comfortable, yet stylish vibe. I was very surprised to find that a color palette, that I very nearly despise, when used together in small doses is actually quite beautiful.
So, again, with this wedding board, simplicity and a clean (white) background are essential. Adding statement pieces, such as the dress, and antler, go a long way, and should be the focal points. No need to clutter it up with the unnecessary.
Thank you, Jessica, for this lovely opportunity and for the chance to test my boundaries and explore color a bit more.

This is wonderful! I also select my color palettes from the images I choose in my moodboards so it’s neat that others do this as well.

So great learning more about Nikkol, especially her design process – that’s so interesting how she collects her images first then gets a color scheme, I think I do that too… or may I find a color palette first haha – I don’t know what I do half the time, actually. But this board is beautiful!
It’s snowing here, Jess – I’m about to go take some pics π And you know I’m going to enter the Leif giveaway xo <3333
